The Girls’ Lounge to Celebrate 100th Year Anniversary of Women’s Right to Vote in DC

Posted January 18, 2017

On Saturday, January 21, The Girls’ Lounge is hosting a day to celebrate the 100th year anniversary of the women’s right to vote and advancing equality for all.

“A woman alone can have power, but collectively we have impact,” said Shelley Zalis, CEO, The Female Quotient (TFQ) and creator of The Girls’ Lounge. “Together we can advance equality in the workplace and in the world.”

The all day event will be held at Belmont-Paul Women’s Equality National Monument, which is home to the National Woman’s Party for nearly 90 years and was the epicenter of the struggle for women’s rights.

“From this house in the shadow of the U.S. Capitol and Supreme Court, Alice Paul and the NWP developed innovative strategies and tactics to advocate for the Equal Rights Amendment and equality for women,” states the monument’s site.

President Barack Obama designated the national monument on April 12, 2016.

The discussions will include everything from a panel conversation celebrating women from history who made a significant impact to “Agents of Change: Women in National Security.”

“It’s important to discuss why we need to modernize the workplace so that we can stop talking about diversity as a business imperative and actually activating the changes that we want to see,” Zalis told DIVERGE.

The day will end with a candlelight centennial as a tribute to the Suffragettes 100 Year March in DC, which will entail a millennial singing Hallelujah, a poetry reading, and young girls from Girl Up reading the Declaration of Sentiments.

The event is free and everyone is welcome to attend.  This will also be the same day as the March on Washington, which plans to start its rally at Independence Avenue and Third Street SW, in front of the Capitol.
