Mary Kay Launches New #DontLookAway Social Media Filter to Promote Anti-Violence Campaign

Posted January 19, 2017

Mary Kay is asking everyone to join them  in sending a positive message of encouragement to those affected by domestic abuse. The company announced a new #DontLookAway Social Media Filter to help spread the word.

Kirsten Gappelberg, Mary Kay Director of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability talks to DIVERGE about the new filter on social media:

How does introducing the new “Don’t Look Away” filter on  social media help the anti-violence campaign?

Mary Kay’s commitment to ending domestic violence is demonstrated through our Don’t Look Away campaign. To date, Mary Kay Inc. and The Mary Kay Foundation have given $53 million to domestic violence prevention and awareness programs in an effort to end the cycle of abuse. We launched this social media campaign at our annual Leadership Conference, and asked attendees to add our “Don’t Look Away” filter to a photo of themselves. By spreading the Don’t Look Away message on social media, we were able to extend our message of domestic violence prevention and reach new audiences.

What do you hope to accomplish with it?

Through the “Don’t Look Away” social media filter, we hope to inspire others to join the fight against domestic violence and learn the signs of abuse so they can partner with us in prevention.

Can you tell me more about this campaign and the work Mary Kay has done on it?

The Don’t Look Away program is Mary Kay’s commitment to ending domestic violence. This includes providing prevention and education tools for children and young adults as well as funding critical and life-saving resources for victims. We like to think of it as a spectrum of support so that each and every individual impacted can one day live a life free from abuse. We want to offer programs and education to people at all stages. Efforts in the campaign also span from pampering days for domestic violence survivors to high school programs teaching students the signs of abuse. Mary Kay also funds the nation’s first text for help resource through an organization called loveisrespect. It’s a crisis line. If you or someone you know needs help you send the text “loveis” to 22522 and an advocate will provide healthy relationship advice.

Can you elaborate on the: loveisrespect text for help service?

Mary Kay is the lead sponsor of the program that provides safe, anonymous text-for-help services.
