The concept of spring break usually means getting away from the everyday routine and worries. In 2017, there were over 3.6 million mentions of Spring Break over the past 30 days in social media, according to leading social intelligence company Talkwalker. Data also showed that more than 48,000 of those mentions also include the word “Trump.”

“Spring breakers aren’t taking a break from politics as President Trump’s stance on Mexico and building a wall are creating a lot of buzz,” Todd Grossman, Talkwalker’s CEO Americas, told DIVERGE. “With Mexico being one of the top Spring Break destinations, social media is buzzing with news of people discussing the irony of supporters of the president visiting Mexico during Spring Break and the news of college students chanting ‘build that wall’ in a pool in Cancun.”

With Mexico being a prime spring break location, social media posts include everything from humor to serious conversation around building a border wall.

According to TalkWalker, data also revealed:

South Padre Island is the clear winner for locations, with this Instagram post from National Geographic receiving nearly a quarter million likes.

But Atlanta is not to be outdone, with the top trending hashtag #OperationSouthBeach (with more than 35,000 mentions) related to a Spring Break kick-off party held at an Atlanta club earlier this month. Brands have gotten in on Spring Break fun too, with this Instagram post from Sephora receiving 63,000 likes.

But all good things must come to an end and when Spring Break is over, it may be best illustrated in this trending tweet from @rainymondays, which received 26,000 likes and 19,000 retweets.
