The Role Diversity Played in the 2017 Golden Globes

Hollywood has been in the limelight for the lack of diversity at award shows since the hashtag #OscarsSoWhite became viral in January 2015.

Many were hoping that the 74th Annual Golden Globes and the Hollywood Foreign Press would recognize the range of diversity that television and film showed in 2016.

In this year’s nominations, diversity included more than just race. Age, experience, and shape also played a role.

Winners included Viola Davis, Donald Glover, Tracee Ellis Ross and more.

“Simply put, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association recognized a slate of talented, deserving and diverse actors as Golden Globe nominees. The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences had better be paying attention. They really have no excuse,” Sheila Rayam, the community engagement editor at the Democrat and Chronicle wrote in her article, “Has Hollywood seen the diversity light?”

“I think nominations should be based on the performances and the available talent that is out there. There is no way to know whether any particular performance or film will achieve a nomination,” Reign explained. “But I’m hopeful that because of the wealth of films this year reflecting the black experience, there will be some corresponding nominations.”

“However, there are still considerable concerns regarding films that express the Latinx experience, the Asian American Pacific Islander experience, the LGBTQIA experience and all marginalized communities referenced under #OscarsSoWhite,” she added.

Let’s see if the Oscars will follow the Golden Globes lead this year.
