DonorsChoose.org has launched its first-ever philanthropic giveaway for #GivingTuesday, which is on November 29th.
A 100 donors and teachers will randomly be selected to get direct $5,000 in grant money from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation for supporting classroom requests, according to a Nov 28 announcement by DonorsChoose.org
On #GivingTuesday, every time a donor supports a classroom on DonorsChoose.org, the donor will be entered into a drawing for one of 50 $5,000 gift cards to support classroom projects. Additionally, the teacher that the donor supported will also be entered into a separate drawing for one of 50 $5,000 DonorsChoose.org gift cards.
The non-profit was founded in 2000 by a Bronx history teacher and has raised $489 million for America’s classrooms by giving teachers the access to come to the site to request the materials and experiences they need most for their classrooms. Donors can then give to the projects that inspire them, explained Christopher Pearsall , Senior Director, Brand & Communication at DonorsChoose.org, which has more than 2.3 million people that have funded 824,000 projects on the site.
“Teachers have a huge responsibility when it comes to instilling values like compassion, tolerance, and respect in their students, and it starts on their very first day of school,” Pearsall stated, as he discussed the importance of diversity. “Our goal is to make sure teachers have what they need to support a diverse student population, whether it’s books that reflect the cultural diversity of their students, or a field trip to a civil rights museum, or a multimedia project on social justice.”
Anyone can contribute to the cause by donating to a project, sharing it with friends and family, signing up for a monthly donation, or introducing a teacher to DonorsChoose.org.
The charity also seems to be Stephen Colbert’s charity of choice. Colbert has worked on several different campaigns with the organization and shows his support by giving every guest on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert a gift card to DonorsChoose.org and a message about why he believes in supporting education.
