Black Muslim families shared pictures, reflections and affirmations demonstrating the beauty, dignity and strength of the of black families in Islam as a part of a Twitter conversation hosted by Muslim Wellness Foundation (MWF) and BlackMuslimPsychology.org (a MWF initiative).
The conversation kicked off on December 26th at 6:00pm on Twitter to address the “false and racially insensitive statements made by world renown American Muslim scholar Shaykh Hamza Yusuf at the Annual Revitalizing the Islamic Spirit (RIS) Convention in Toronto, Canada,” a statement explained.
According to event organizers, Yusuf’s view on Black Lives Matter was not only misleading but also widely seen as a blatant dismissal of police brutality inflicted on Black and Brown communities.
“Black Muslims must contend with anti-Black racism, intra-Muslim racism (from our non-Black co-religionists) anti-Muslim bigotry in broader society. While the community has remained resilient, faithful and proud in the face of these assaults, it takes a considerable toll on our emotional, psychological and spiritual health,” Kameelah Mu’Min Rashad, MS, MRP, MEd, Founder & Executive Director of the Muslim Wellness Foundation told DIVERGE. “This hashtag was organized as one way in which we can begin to heal from those racial wounds.”
“It is a celebration and affirmation of our community’s beauty, dignity and deeply rooted truth,” she added, asking others to share their joy and love to heal. “My hope is that it serves to dispel some of the pervasive and negative messages and stereotypes about who we are.”
