Local Nursery Aims to Restore the Great Smoky Mountains, One Tree at a Time

Posted December 6, 2016

Last week, a fire burned over 15,000 acres of the Great Smoky Mountains, affecting the large tourist attractions of Gatlinburg, including the National park.

A local business, Tennessee Wholesale Nursery is also coming to the aid of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park by donating thousands of trees in the spring, which is the prime planting season in Tennessee, according to a press release.

“Gatlinburg is the cornerstone of pride in Tennessee and even those residing in Tennessee visits this area annually or Bi- annually,” Tammy Sons, the nursery’s CEO told DIVERGE. “Our objective at Tennessee Nursery is to restore the Great Smoky Mountains as they were prior to the wildfire’s vast destruction.”

The goal is to re-plant the thousands of acres of trees lost in the wildfire. Tammy at TN Nursery is asking for other nurseries in Tennessee to lend a hand and help their fellow Tennessee neighbors with tree donations of hardwoods, maples, poplars, pines and other type species that the Smoky Mountains National Park was once filled with.

“Without trees, there is no beauty and wildlife will flea to other parts of the country for habitat,” explained Sons. “The majority of the damage otherwise can be restored with construction but the major effect will be on the loss of nature which is the mountains and all those critters that inhabits them.”

Sons is not only urging other nurseries to contribute but also asking everyone to donate trees, lend a hand in cleanup, or contribute time or resources that are readily available.

“Let’s help each other restore America and make the Great Smoky Mountains great again,” she added.
