On January 12, President Barack Obama held a news conference honoring Vice President Joe Biden and giving the Internet “one last chance to talk about our bromance.”
“There has not been a single moment since that time that I have doubted the wisdom of that decision,” Obama began, talking about naming Biden VP. “It was the best possible choice, not just for me but for the American people.”
He went on to discuss Biden’s career in public service and his accomplishments in the last 8 years. The long list included his work on protecting women from violence, making colleges more affordable, combating gun violence, and addressing college campus sexual assault. Obama also talked about Biden’s personality: “Folks don’t just feel like they know Joe, the politician. They feel like they know the person,” the President stated. “What makes him laugh, what he believes, what he cares about, where he came from.”
He also bestowed the medal with an additional level of veneration, an honor, the three most presidents only reserved for only three others; Pope John Paul II, President Ronald Regan, and General Colin Powell.
Biden was surprised and emotions ran high as he turned his back to the camera to wipe tears away. His impromptu speech also grabbed the hearts of viewers. He thanked his wife and children, the Obamas and his staff for being there for him to lean on when he was facing challenges.
“Mr. President, this honor is – isn’t only well beyond what I deserve, but it’s a reflection of the extent and generosity of your spirit,” Biden stated. “I don’t deserve this, but I know it came from the president’s heart.”
“And Mr. President, you know as long as there’s breath in me, I’ll be there for you, my whole family will be and I know, I know it is reciprocal. I – and I want to thank you all so very, very, very much. All of you. Thank you,” he concluded.
The internet, of course, used the opportunity once again to talk about Biden and Obama.
