Women’s March on Washington: “NOW, The Real Work Begins”

Posted January 26, 2017

The March on Washington made history and exceeded expectations for many.  With about 1.2 million people gathered in Washington, DC and another 3 million gathered in cities and towns across our nation, the Women’s March became the largest mass demonstration in U.S. history. With 5 million people marching globally, January 21st was likely one of the largest coordinated global protests in world history.

“Together, we demonstrated a collective commitment to protect, defend and advance human rights, even in the face of adversity. The solidarity we saw on 1/21 will be necessary to protect our families, our communities and our planet in the coming weeks and months,” states an email from The March on Washington.”We thank you for your courage, your hard work, and your commitment. NOW, the real work begins.”

The March on Washington just sent out a call to action:

1. Sign Up For WMW 10 Actions 100 Days:

Over the first 100 days, the organizers of the Women’s March will share 10 collective actions. The first action is to print a Women’s March postcard and write a message to your member of Congress. You can visit our First 100 Days page to find out how to contact your representative.

2. Keep the Energy Going:

Are you still feeling fired up after last weekend? Looking for a way to build on that momentum and energy to show that we won’t back down?

Then you should join us in protest in Philadelphia TOMORROWThursday January 26th at 11am.

Every Republican member of Congress and the Senate — plus President Trump himself — are gathering in Philly TOMORROW to plan their 2017 agenda. Top of the list is to dismantle healthcare, education, immigration, privatization of infrastructure, loss of civil rights, and much more.

We can’t let their first meeting go uninterrupted. The action starts at 11:00 am at Thomas Paine Plaza. Wear your pink hats, to let them know WOMEN are watching, organized and ready to fight!

If you can’t make it please support the action on social media. Here are a  few sample tweets and Facebook posts you can share.

3. Stay Informed:

Global Gag Rule Reinstated

Surrounded by a room full of men, President Donald Trump increased the power of the global gag rule — compromising women’s lives in a move that will cause health centers to close around the world. Any day now, the Affordable Care Act (ACA)’s no-copay birth control benefit is likely to be on the chopping block.  Without access to reproductive health care and family planning services, the health and autonomy of women in the U.S. and around the world will be compromised.

Betsy DeVos Nominated For Education Secretary

The new administration has chosen an opponent of public schools to serve as Secretary of Education.  Betsy DeVos is a lobbyist, not an educator, and has never served on a school board. She won’t protect students with disabilities’ right to an education. She has even defended guns in schools.

Get connected to action: Send a Women’s March postcard to your Senators telling them to vote NO on Betsy DeVos, or thanking them for standing against this appointment. You can also send a petition via our partner MomsRising.

#NoDAPL

Water Protectors acted courageously on behalf of the millions of people who depend on the Missouri River. In December, the Army Corps of Engineers pledged to conduct a full environmental review and evaluate alternative sites for the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). This week, President Trump acted on behalf of the oil interests and signed an executive order to restart the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline, as well as the Keystone XL pipeline. This disregards the treaty rights of Indigenous people and further threatens clean water in our nation.

IMMIGRATION

The President is living up to his hateful rhetoric towards new Americans, already pledging to block all refugees fleeing genocide in Syria–80% of whom are women and children–as well as all immigrants from the Middle East and North Africa. He’s also preparing to force taxpayers to pay for a border wall, a spectre of a terrible period in European history. Any day now, we expect him to repeal executive orders allowing Americans who arrived here as children to live and work–and he’s pledging to legally attack our cities that choose to provide sanctuary for immigrants. Listen to 6 year-old Sophie Cruz talk about keeping families together at the Women’s March on Washington.

#IMARCHWITHLINDA

Women’s March on Washington co-chair, Linda Sarsour, is on the receiving end of a terrible smear campaign and violent threats. This is what Islamophobia looks like, demonizing an entire religion and attacking a beloved and recognized leader simply for her faith. On Saturday, Linda shared with us how Muslim Americans need us to surround and protect them, saying “sisters and brothers, YOU are my hope for my community.” (Watch the full speech here)
