Courtney M. Privett, a fiction writer currently living in California, decided to express her emotions through her art.
Privett, who has an engineering degree and worked as an analytical chemist until she became a stay at mom home, was angry when she saw the news about Elizabeth Warren not being able to speak on the Senate floor. Read the full story here.
She explained that she was making breakfast for her 2 and 5-year-old daughters and reading the news when she read about Mitch McConnell’s vote.
“A thought jumped out at me — I don’t want my daughters to hear the same things I have. I’ve heard derogatory commentary about my gender as long as I can remember.”
Privett went on to draw two more versions of the viral drawing, one with a male point of view and one for those facing chronic illnesses.
After receiving an overwhelmingly positive response, Privett has taken her artwork a step further.
“I was bombarded by requests for prints almost as soon as I posted the first image. I knew immediately that I wanted this to be a charity project because it felt like it belonged to all of us rather than only to me,” she told DIVERGE.
After research, Privett has decided to donate her profits to two organizations that “help people out of dark places and give them tools to keep persisting.”
All proceeds from the products will be split between two charities – The Trevor Project, which provides support to LGBTQ youth in crisis, and The Midnight Mission, a Los Angeles-based organization that helps people overcome homelessness.
“Because of the large volume of requests, I’m offering prints on Zazzle. This also allows people to pick their own options when it comes to styles and sizes. If you click on the options on each product, you can get to the style you want,” she explained.
For those who want to support her work, her online store is available at https://www.zazzle.com/keep_persisting.
