CinemaStreet Pictures, a woman-owned New York City production company, released an inspirational public service announcement marking the Women’s March on Washington on the organization’s YouTube channel. The video was released on February 21, the one month anniversary of the date when millions of Americans took to the streets to voice their concern about policies of discrimination and division.
Produced on a pro bono basis, the video uses a dynamic, split-screen visual style to tell a densely-layered story of commitment, passion and concern for the rights of women and those being marginalized or disenfranchised in American society today.
DIVERGE talked to Offenbach to find out more:
Why did you decide to document this?
I woke up on November 9th wanting to do something. When I saw that women were organizing a march, I immediately wanted to get involved and document whatever it was they were doing.
Do you think history was made that day?
I know it was. This was the largest worldwide coordinated rally/march in history. There were over 600 marches worldwide and on every single continent.
Why did you march?
I didn’t – I was filming. I shot footage as my contribution to protecting the rights that were being threatened by the current administration. I wanted to let them know that we would show up in large numbers and the country’s voice would not be silenced.
How did you feel when you saw the turnout, met those who marched and heard the speeches?
When I finally had a moment to think, I sat down and cried. The beauty of what had taken place was overwhelming. Never had I experienced anything like it before. My hope for continued social progress returned.
Who is the team behind the documentary?
I’ve attached the full credit list – but it was me, Mariah Duff and Ed Han who really put it all together. In addition we worked with Bob Bland, Founder & Co-Chair of the March and Breanne Butler, Global Organizer for the 8 weeks leading up to the march. Two amazing selfless women.
Also, I really feel that the editing brought this to life and I credit Noelle Webb for doing an amazing editing job.
Are you planning additional work around this?
Yes. We have twenty hours of footage and some great interviews and are now figuring out what to do with all of it.
Additional thoughts?
The most positive things that came out of this for me was the worldwide response to the effort and the hope that people will continue to work together to move our country forward in a positive way.
